Guesthouses & Cheap Rooms
Malaysian Guesthouses and cheap rooms tend to be a bit more expensive than what you would find in the region especially compared to Thailand resort areas, when you get out to the islands guesthouses they really cream you for what you get and how much you pay.
Perhentian Island guesthouses in particular are not a good value, this may change as there is allot of development going on with government electricity as well as a government pier-jetty are being put in as this is being written on Long Beach, on the smaller but busier of the Perhentian islands which is where you will find the most guesthouses and cheap rooms. For the Perhentian Resorts with the exception of Bubu Hotel Beach Resort they are on different beach's, or on the big Perhentian island
Moonlight Guesthouse the best value for cheap rooms with a good little restaurant. They have differnet value rooms, the cheapest being the bungalows in the back which go for around 20RM or a little under $7 USD a night with share bathroom, cold water shower. The main reason we singled them out is that are the only cheap rooms that have 24 hour electricity. Moonlight also have nicer rooms with cold water bath attached at 60rm a night,. Attached to moonlight is Sunlight Divers and Quiver Dive team both very good scuba diving operators.
Chemapka Chalet guesthouse if you want a good idea of a bad operation this is the place to go. The staff couldn't be bothered, so you show yourself to the rooms.. Spice divers looks like they have a good operation but the local staff obviously is over worked as the 5 of them that were sitting at the table didn't even try to offer me scuba diving I guess a middle age male with a expensive dive watch on doesn't appeal to them. I was recommended there by my good friend in Bangkok on Khoa San rd but with the cold reception that I received there was no way I was going to dive with them.
The biggest problems are the lack of good toilet facilities and 24 hour electricity. The internet is also a area that they really take you for a ride this is starting to be lifted as the dive shops like Quiver and Sunlight divers are giving free internet access to their divers, which is starting to bring the prices down. I have been searching for any kind of deal and there isn't any so if you are not a scuba diver you might want to look else where in Malaysia as this is not a good value area if you are on a cheaper budget.
